BOARD MEMBER

William is the Market Engagement Director for the Mobile for Humanitarian Innovation programme at the GSMA. The role entails working with mobile network operators and humanitarian organisations to find commercially sustainable solutions in complex humanitarian situations. He is the founder and chair of the Financial Inclusion Forum Africa. The forum brings together people who are passionate about financial inclusion across Africa.

Before joining the GSMA, William worked in the financial sector for over 20 years. He worked as the Director for Strategic Partnerships and digital banking for Fidelity Bank Ghana. He was responsible for developing and driving the banks financial inclusion agenda as its first Financial Inclusion Director and set up the first agent banking network in the country and developed and deployed several mobile linked financial products with MNOs in Ghana. Before then, William was the Head of Community Investment for Barclays Bank, responsible for Africa, Asia and the Middle East. There he was the responsible also for the bank’s financial inclusion agenda, youth and entrepreneurship programmes in the region.

William is a passionate speaker on development in general and in financial inclusion in particular. He is a board director of Access to Finance Rwanda (AFR), Enhancing Financial Inclusion and Access in Nigeria (EFInA), a steering committee member for the Smart Campaign, a former regional board member for Junior Achievement Africa and former board member of Airtel Money (Ghana). He is also a regular speaker at various financial inclusion platforms and have played various advisory roles on digital financial inclusion.

William has a PhD in Financial Inclusion from Nottingham Trent Business School on financial inclusion and an MBA (Economic Development) from Birmingham City University and first-class degree in Economics and Mathematics from University of Cape Coast in Ghana.
